Many thanks for the new SPNDS play area improvements!

Many thanks to BSA Troop 112’s Nolen Spivey who has brought some upgrades to the SPNDS’ playground. We now have two new play structures, a moveable outdoor water run, a sunshade over the sandbox, and child-sized picnic tables and stools. It has been a real pleasure to work with Nolan on this project. We are looking forward to using these new additions to our play space. Nolan chose this project as a part of the requirements for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to Nolan for a job well done. We really appreciate the hard work Nolan and his team from Troop 112 have put in to completing such a wonderful project!

› SPNDS Earns National NAEYC Accreditation

Program recognized among the top in the nation by earning accreditation.

A

t the end of September, the Swarthmore Presbyterian Nursery Day School (SPNDS) got a visit from a NAEYC Accreditation Accessor. She spent two days in classrooms and looking at materials put together for her to view. On October 16th, the school could view the Accreditation Report that our program earned NAEYC accreditation for another five years.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is the world’s largest organization working on behalf of young children. NAEYC Accreditation Process is a rigorous process that includes a transformative quality-improvement system based on a set of 10 research-based standards. The NAEYC organization collaborates with early education programs to recognize and drive quality-improvement in high-quality early learning environments. “We are proud to have earned the mark of quality again from the NAEYC, and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Director Deb Hansen. This marks the sixth time the school has been through the accreditation process marking 25 years of being continuously accredited.

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the teachers and staff went through an extensive self-study and quality-improvement process, followed by an on-site visit by NAEYC Assessors to verify and ensure that the program met each of the ten program standards, and hundreds of corresponding individual criteria. NAEYC-accredited programs are always prepared for unannounced quality-assurance visits during their accreditation term, which lasts for five years.

› Mike and Maureen’s Mud Kitchen

T

he beginning of October brought us the opening of our new Mud Kitchen. Children are busy all day long mixing mulch and mud and “serving” each other and the staff “soups and desserts.” There is even a special spot for digging. Teacher Maureen has long dreamed of having a Mud Kitchen on our playground and some parents pulled resources as a gift to Maureen and in honor of her late husband, Mike. The design counter space, a sink and a water source and was planned and built by a parent with some assistance from a local Scout from troop 112 who has picked our school to be part of his Eagle Scout Project. The letters were decorated by SPNDS students. We may still add a few more fun details, but it has been an instant hit with the children.

› The SPNDS Art Show

Every Spring Swarthmore Presbyterian Nursery Day School celebrates the creativity of its students with an Art show for families. We were all happy to be able to get together this year after a few years of COVID protocols limiting this opportunity. Families brought their own picnics to eat outside while awaiting their chance to visit the show in smaller groups. Check out the short video above with a small sampling of the displays.
