Mel Brooks is a Kennedy Center Honoree and recipient of the National Medal of the Arts, while Anne Bancroft is one of only 24 actors to achieve the prestigious Triple Crown of Acting. Throughout the year, we’ll explore their films, their lives, their humor, and the creative energy that made them enduring icons of stage and screen. Our celebration begins with the 1983 remake of To Be or Not to Be, starring both Bancroft and Brooks. This sharp comedy follows a troupe of actors in Nazi-occupied Poland who use their talents for disguise and performance to outwit the occupying forces.
