On Monday, August 10, Swarthmore Presbyterian Church hosted its 133rd Red Cross blood drive since the program began in Fellowship Hall in spring 2015. The all-day drive ran from 9 am to 7 pm—routine enough at first glance. The Red Cross van arrived promptly at 7:45 am and unloaded 20 boxes of supplies and equipment into the hall. At 8:00 am, six staff members began arranging four donor beds and setting up computers and other equipment across 10 tables in the spacious room. Soft background music began around 8:45 am, and the first donors arrived in the foyer shortly before 9:00 am After the receptionist identified those who had completed the RapidPass questionnaire online, they proceeded to screening stations for blood pressure and hemoglobin checks. By 9:15 am, three donors were reclining on the beds, each giving a pint of blood beneath Fellowship Hall’s cherrywood slatted ceiling. By 9:30 am, the first donors were sitting upright, bright red gauze wrapped around their arms—a vivid sign of successful donations. The drive was underway.
The Red Cross’s well-organized process kept donations from friends and neighbors throughout the greater Swarthmore community flowing steadily until 7:00 pm When the drive concluded at 7:30 pm, a record 80 donors had successfully given blood. The collection will provide 240 units for transfusion, available within the next week to patients at hospitals across the Philadelphia region. Witnessing this life-saving generosity amid the summer decline in the regional blood supply was profoundly uplifting. It exemplified SPC Mission Outreach at its most meaningful: quiet acts of selfless giving to anonymous neighbors who may urgently need transfusions.
