About Rev. Rajagopal and the Darby Mission

The Rev. Dora Rajagopal is an Episcopal priest in The Diocese of Pennsylvania. Before being ordained as an Episcopal priest, Dora worked as a Research Psychologist in the areas of aging and emotion; addiction; and spirituality and mental health. Dora was ordained more than 15 years ago and served at that time as the Chaplain to St. Augustine of Hippo Church in Norristown. While there, she continued to support a weekly Sunday morning breakfast for the community. She added a hands-on healing prayer service after breakfast and worked to create an after-school program for elementary school girls: Girls First.

Dora left Norristown after two years to become the Priest-in-Charge of All Saints Church, Darby. All Saints had been struggling with declining attendance and a severe lack of resources for decades. The church closed in 2014, but the diocesan bishop agreed to allow Dora to remain in Darby, serving in a new way- a priest with no building- creating The Darby Mission.

The goal of the Darby Mission is to meet people where they are and show them the love of Jesus Christ by walking with them in their journey and alleviating their suffering when possible. Most of our residents struggle financially, even to secure even the most basic of human necessities, such as food. The Mission serves Darby residents through several programs, including a monthly Darby Dinner, a monthly food giveaway, and a new teen program: Through Our Eyes. We also gather weekly in our house church for worship, including a shared dinner. In the past we have also created a farm stand, a community garden, computer classes for senior citizens, Our Closet clothing giveaways, mural projects, and cooking classes for teens, and a still thriving after school program and summer camp for elementary school students.

Looking Ahead: On Sunday, November 24, we will explore the Earth Care Congregation program, and how it helps us recognize what we are doing within the larger context of Creation Care and can energize us to be more faithful stewards. On Sunday, December 1, join us for an adult education session with Matt Hartley to learn about the role of Confessions of Faith in the Presbyterian Church (USA), learn about the work currently being undertaken to write a confession for this moment, and discuss the events currently happening in the world that are moving people of faith to clarify our call to Discipleship in this moment.
