Safety, Advocacy & Support Services for Local Victims of Domestic Abuse

The Presbyterian Women of SPC invite you to support the Domestic Abuse Project (DAP) of Delaware County this May. Located in Media, DAP was established in 1976 as part of a movement to provide safety, advocacy, and supportive services to victims of domestic abuse in Delaware County. DAP’s life-saving services include a 24/7 telephone hotline, an emergency shelter, counseling, legal representation and advocacy services, housing and relocation services, and community outreach. All these services are free, confidential, and available to all Delaware County residents regardless of race/ethnicity, gender identity, age, or disability. DAP is the only service provider exclusively for survivors of domestic violence in Delaware County.

DAP’s Safe House has 35 beds and is open 365 days a year to give safe shelter to victims fleeing domestic violence. Survivors who stay in DAP’s Safe House are typically low- to moderate-income women with young children and no financial resources. They are provided with all the essentials for daily living and comfort: food, clothing, transportation, as well as case management to assist them as they heal from trauma and move toward lives free from abuse. In addition, DAP provides critical financial support to pay for moving expenses, utility bills, furniture, and essential household supplies to ensure that survivors secure stable long-term housing when they transition from the Safe House into their own homes.

Domestic violence has profound impacts on women and children, physically, emotionally, and economically. Children who witness domestic violence are at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety, and chronic health problems in adulthood, as well as repeating the cycle of violence in their own lives. Women in abusive relationships are more likely to experience low self-esteem, job instability, and barriers to self-sufficiency.

How can you help the Domestic Abuse Project (DAP)?

DAP urgently needs supplies for women and children staying in its Safe House. In particular, the Safe House needs new twin sheet sets, new twin comforters, new standard pillows and / or $50 ACME grocery gift cards. Please bring donations to the SPC Outreach Center on weekdays (10:00 am – 4:00 pm) or to Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings May 12, 19 or 26. Gift cards should be taken to the church office. For more information about DAP, its services, and ways you can support survivors, please click here, or email Kerry Hogg at khogg@dapdc.org. Kerry, an SPC member, serves on DAP’s staff and is knowledgeable and passionate about this work. Thank you!
