Moment for Stewardship: The Choirs of SPC & Wesley A.M.E.

or the past two years, the Choirs of SPC and Wesley A.M.E. have joyfully united their singing voices to lead worship on a Sunday during Advent at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. This joyful collaboration blossomed from a shared worship relationship, where the congregations of Wesley A.M.E. in Swarthmore and SPC alternated monthly serving as host or guest in each other’s places of worship. Led by love for the same God, and fed by Christ’s loving example, new relationships were able to form where there previously were none.
This year, mutual singing friends from Bethel A.M.E. in Landsdowne will join the Choirs of Wesley A.M.E. and SPC at a morning service of worship and song on Sunday, December 14 at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. The singers will share music then for worship that they prepare together during a few rehearsals.
I have noticed during the Choirs’ rehearsal time how a love of God and love for each other leads their work together. The singers do their best to try new things during rehearsal, getting out of their comfort zone to meet their singing neighbors where they are. They learn music by rote when their habit may be to learn music with a score. They shift on a dime when they may be most at ease planning ahead.
Most importantly, the singers do their very best to give of their breath and spirit as they sing each other’s songs for worship. They sing with love for each other, and they sing the music that their neighbor loves. They sing with love for the God whom they worship and adore. Thanks be to God for love that inspires and transforms the Choirs’ music-making: it truly changes everything.
