Moment for Stewardship: Advent Service of Word & Song with SPC & Wesley A.M.E. Church

O
n Sunday, December 15, singing together, the choirs of Wesley A.M.E. and SPC will lead us in worship, and I believe our worship will be pleasing to God. Together during this Advent season, we will make a joyful noise to the Lord. Our hearts and voices will be aligned for this purpose.
Our choirs have been learning music together, and because of the relationships they have been building with one another, they are more relaxed as they take musical risks. Our worshipful expression will feel like a culmination of the care and friendship our congregations have intentionally been building over the past three years.
The particular idea to develop a friendship between Wesley A.M.E. and Swarthmore Presbyterian Church arose out of many recognitions. One was that, if we want to create a new social reality, we need to address the relationships that form the world, and in some cases, this may mean that existing relationships need to change, and in other cases, it may mean that new relationships that did not exist before need to be formed. Only when we relate to people in new ways or with whom we never had a relationship before can we become “a new creation.”
Another recognition that guided our friendship was a desire to create relationships that are voluntary, sustainable, and generative over the long-term. Congregations are well-suited for this kind of effort because everything we do is voluntary. Everything we do flows from the heart. If an effort does not arise from the heart, we know it will not be generative and sustainable.
As churches, worship is at the core of who we are. We thought our new relationship would have the most integrity if it, too, were grounded in the activity of worshipping together. So, ever since we came out of the Pandemic, our congregations have been worshiping together one Sunday per month, alternating as guest and host.
On December 15, moved by the leadership and example set by our choirs, SPC and Wesley A.M.E. will manifest the reach of God’s love. We are not as we were before. In us God is doing a new thing!

2025 Stewardship Campaign Update
From the SPC Business Office: We have now received 236 pledges totaling $726,046, which is 87% of the way towards next year’s pledge goal of $835,000. We also have 64% of the congregation who have already pledged committing more for 2025 than they did for 2024. Thank you to all who have submitted your pledge, we appreciate your support of SPC! Pledges enable us to plan our ministry in advance and ties to our annual budgeting process.
