Mission Possible
Summer 2011: July 18-22
What is Mission Possible?
Just the best thing ever. MP6 was the sixth edition of SPC’s summer middle school mission trip. We welcomed our friends from these Presbyterian churches: Davidson College (North Carolina), First Shelbyville, and Harpeth (Tennessee). Home-based right in our own church, we served and learned from the hungry, the poor, the elderly, the homeless and those who struggle on behalf of God’s justice. We also had a ton of fun and did some worshipping, too. Check out these photos to see how God is at work in Philadelphia and its surrounding communities through us and our partners in ministry.

What do we do?
Our goals are to serve, learn, play and worship. Each day, our small groups head out to different mission agencies to serve and learn, usually one or two sites per day. There is recreation and social time everyday, as well as time to reflect. The words of Abby Dawes, one of our 2011 participants, offer some insight:
"We ate in Fellowship Hall for breakfast and dinner. Different parents and church members volunteered to cook our meals, which was greatly appreciated. We also packed our lunches each day. Evenings included two worship services, one in Loeffler Chapel, and the other in Fellowship Hall (after realizing that Loeffler was way too hot). At these services, we heard sermons from guest preachers. One was from a previous DCPC minister, and another from a friend of John’s. We also sang songs, took communion, and went on a spiritual walk, pretending that we were the Mary’s going to Jesus’ tomb. Every morning, we would go to a worksite, then in the afternoon we would go somewhere educational. The first day, we went on a tour of Independence Hall, and the second we went to Broad Street Ministry, where we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and served them to hungry people on the streets. That was really powerful because as we talked to them, we realized that they were just normal people like us who were living a miserable life on the streets. Finally, on the third day, we took a break and had a pool party! The whole Mission Possible experience is fantastic. It showed us that there are so many charities and people in need that are close to us, yet we never hear about them. To help these great causes while meeting new friends from other churches, it’s just amazing."
