Children’s Ministry

At SPC, we try to impart the best of our faith to our children. Our weekly Sunday School classes are designed to raise children in the ABC’s of Christian faith, while creating space for them to ask their questions about the bible, Jesus, and God. Based on the “SPARK” Sunday school curriculum, classes offer lively, age-appropriate activities, such as games, crafts, and creative play, ensuring a fun learning environment for all ages.

Gather and Sing!

We begin our morning with music! Children are invited to “gather and sing” at 9:00 am for the first 15 minutes of Sunday school. Using music, together they will think about the lessons of the day and what’s happening in worship. They will learn some of the often-used refrains used during services and may get a sneak-peak of what we will sing in worship that day.

Sunday School Curriculum

Immediately after Gather & Sing, children age 4 through 5th grade are invited to classes that follow the SPARK curriculum. SPARK is “a Sunday school faith formation program designed to activate faith in children.” SPARK is innovative and intuitive, and lessons follow the lectionary, meaning that whatever is studied in our 9:00 a.m. classes will be reinforced in worship at 10:15 a.m.

  • Toddlers (ages 2 & 3): Frolic “Little Steps, Big Faith.” Children engage in this delightful early learning curriculum that teaches them about God and the world around them. Class meets in the Orange Room (222).
  • Young Children (age 4–kindergarten): Games, play, stories, and more. Class meets in the Purple Room (220).
  • Early Elementary School Children (grades 1 & 2): Reading, games, crafts, and storytelling that recognize all learning styles. Class meets in the Green Room (225).
  • Older Elementary School Children (grades 3-5): More of the reading at this level is by the children. New games, songs, and responding to stories in a variety of ways. Class meets in the Pink Room (226).

Note for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Class ends at 10:00 a.m., but volunteers provide child care during worship for those who struggle to make it through a worship service. We hope that even young children will begin to worship and practice worship skills at SPC, but we know that this is a process, so there is a great team of adults and older youth to be with our toddlers in the nursery, and with preschool ages and up after “A Time with Children.”

Childcare

Infants and young toddlers are invited to our sunny corner room in McCahan Hall and into the competent and loving hands of Nursery coordinator Sarah Fickling. Our Nursery opens each Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. to allow parents to participate in our Adult Education classes and remains open until the beginning of fellowship hour.

3rd Friday Events

On the third Friday of each month (typically), SPC’s Children Ministry committee invites all members of the congregation to gather for 2 hours in Fellowship Hall for some fun and fellowship. Some of our monthly events are geared towards our younger members: showing movies, bringing in a small petting zoo, and soon, hosting a magician. Two times each year they host an all-church game night, with yummy food and lots of friendly competition. They also use this time to bring together volunteers to work with global mission partners to help with worthy causes, such as Stop Hunger Now. All are welcome!
