Rev. Joyce Shin
Pastor/Head of Staff
Swarthmore Presbyterian Church is delighted to welcome Rev.
Joyce Shin as the 10th Pastor/Head of Staff to this congregation.
Joyce earned her B.A. at Rhodes, a liberal arts college in Memphis,
Tennessee, where she majored in both Religious Studies and Classical Languages. She then studied Ethics at Tübingen University (Germany) as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar. In 2000, Joyce completed her Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) at The Divinity School of The University of Chicago, with a thesis on “The Role of Music in Theological Education.” She has since pursued doctoral work in Theological Ethics, and is currently completing her dissertation on “Faith in an Age of Cultural Pluralism: An Aesthetic Approach to Transformation.”
For 10 years, Joyce served as Associate Pastor for Congregational Life at Fourth Presbyterian Church ("Fourth") in Chicago, a large urban church whose membership numbers over 5000. She is passionate about building interfaith relationships, has an unbridled spirit of inquiry, and is committed to serving the greater church (through service on two national boards) as well as the local church. In the succinct words of our Pastor Nominating Committee, "she has the mind of a scholar and the heart of a pastor."
Joyce's husband, Michael David, and their 7th grade daughter, Sophia, will be joining her in Swarthmore at the end of the academic year.
“I believe that the questions we ask in life are precious,” she says. “If mined and honed, they reveal the core
of our concerns. I, too, have questions, and I know how important it is to be in a community of fellow inquirers."

"I believe that God has placed a spark of faith in every one of God’s children. I am drawn to those sparks and see my ministerial task as helping fan them into raging conflagrations. I love working with young people in particular and have felt called to minister to them since I was a senior in high school."
