Music at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church is rich and diverse. We believe that music should reflect, support, and reiterate the Word, with the lectionary and church day as its guide. With this in mind, music for each worship service, including hymns, anthems, and the Psalter (which is sung or chanted), is carefully selected.
Special musical offerings usually include major choral works during Advent and Lent, and a Cantata led by our children's and youth choirs usually presented on Christian Family Sunday in May. Our 2016 Advent offering included two pieces: Vivaldi's Gloria and Frank Burch Brown's Mary with Jesus, presented in worship Sunday, December 11, 2016. Our special offering for Lent, presented on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, was Gabriel Faure's Requiem. Our 2017 children's cantata is "Rock Solid," by Jimmy and Gail Getzen.
We are delighted to announce that Meghan Meloy Ness has answered the call to serve as Director of Music Ministry beginning August 21, 2017. To read about Meghan's background and the gifts she brings to this work, click on her picture (left).
Our chancel choir, a lively group of adults from college students to septagenarians, rehearses on Thursdays at 7:30 pm and on Sunday mornings before worship. There is weekly participation in worship and major works are presented during Advent and Lent, often accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Newcomers are always welcome!
Our Youth Choir weclomes singers in grades 6-12. This group leads worship on Christmas Eve (8 pm) and Youth Sunday and sings periodically on Sunday mornings throughout the year.
Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00pm in Loeffler Chapel. Friends who enjoy singing in an ensemble are welcome always.
Our Children's Choir is open to all singers in grades 1-5. This group has a lot of energy and a lot of fun making music together! They sing in worship several times a year, and lead worship with the presentation of a musical one Sunday in May.
Rehearsals are Sunday mornings from 11:15am-12:00noon in McCahan Hall.
Chancel Bell Choir
The Chancel Bell Choir is open to all who read music and can attend rehearsals very regularly. There are 13 "positions" and substitutes are of great value, as no piece is complete when one or two bells are missing.
Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7:45pm in Loeffler Chapel. There is monthly participation in worship.
When in our music God is glorified,
and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried "Alleluia!"
hymn #641, Glory to God
