High School Summer Conference
The Call of Montreat
in the words of Rev. John Weicher

Here, our youth are the church, thoroughly and totally the church, with all of their very being. They line up early to get good seats in the front for worship services and keynote presentations. They dance crazily to beloved songs — youth who don’t typically dance, youth who don’t typically lose themselves in the presence of their peers. (They actually roar when favorites are introduced.) They sing songs of the faith, new and ancient, and sway, arm-in-arm, as they do. They listen to each other and comfort one another in late-night devotions and candlelight worship. They hope for small groups (made up of youth from other churches, so strangers) to share their deep vulnerabilities, honest questions, and claimed-for-themselves faith. Indeed, they encourage each other to break the ice and be leaders in these groups, as if it were halftime huddle of a field hockey team. And they do it all among hundreds of their peers.

Here, our youth (and adults) are the church with all of their very being, in ways that are impossible in 2 hours of youth group on Sunday night or 1 hour of worship or even a week of mission trip to Appalachia or Nicaragua.

So, I continue to beg, borrow and steal our youth away from worthy camps and summer jobs and family vacations and hesitant doubts and leaving-home anxieties. I continue to encourage them to sign up or apply to be leaders, whether in the conference itself or as part of the Planning Team. I continue to bring them to the thinnest place I know, the place where the Holy Spirit seems to run on all cylinders, in the hope that by being the church here, they may be the church everywhere else.
