Sunday Mornings Are for Children!
8:30am to 12:15pm
in the nursery, McCahan 224
Childcare for infants and toddlers is provided every Sunday in the
nursery by a group of volunteers that love children. The nursery is
staffed regularly beginning at 8:30am. Care during 8:00 worship is provided by request; simply give us a week's notice that this would be useful. Toddlers move to their own Sunday School class (across the hall) at 9:00; see notes below.

Gather & Sing!
For the 1st 20 minutes or so on Sunday mornings, children gather to think about the lessons of the day using music that helps that thinking. As in worship, there will be consistent opening and closing music. And because the theme of God’s love is constant, and we will think about what’s happening in worship as well as in Sunday school on any given day, will develop a repertoire of service music and core pieces that we hope each child’s family will soon get to know as well!
Preschoolers & Kindergartners meet in the GREEN room (224);
those in grades 1-5 meet in the PURPLE room (220).
Sunday School Curriculum
Children age four through 5th grade are invited to classes that follow the "SPARK" curriculum. SPARK is described on its website as "a Sunday school faith formation program designed to activate faith in children." Spark is innovative, intuitive and designed to ease the burden of planning and teacher preparation for Christian Education Directors and Sunday school teachers. Lessons follow the lectionary -- meaning that whatever is studied in our 9:00 classes will be reinforced in worship at 10:15. Teachers work in teams -- ideally serving for 4 weeks at a time. Classes are grouped as follows:
Toddlers (ages 2 & 3)
Toddlers meet in the ORANGE room (222) across from the nursery.
Young Children (age 4-kindergarten)
Games, play, stories, and more in the PURPLE room (220) right next to McCahan Hall.
Note for Toddlers and Preschoolers:
Class ends at 10:00, but volunteers (often Ashley Charles) provide child care during worship for those
who struggle to make it through a worship service. We hope that even young children will begin to
worship and practice worship skills at SPC, but we know that this is a process and not an event,
so there is a great team of adults and older youth to be with our toddlers and preschoolers.
Early Elementary Children (grades 1 & 2)
Reading, games, crafts, and story-telling that recognize all learning styles in the GREEN room (225).
Older Elementary Children (grades 3-5)
More of the reading at this level is by the children. New games, songs, responding to stories in a variety of ways. They meet in the PINK room (225).
Inspiration & Entertainment
Are you having trouble getting your children out of bed to come to Sunday school? Do you wonder if it's worth the struggle? John Weicher (Associate Pastor for Youth Ministry) and Ashley Kuly Charles (Children's Ministry Coordinator) have put together some pretty entertaining and legitimately helpful videos on some of these very topics. Check them out!
1) What is Sunday School? WHAT IS 3) What if my children don't want to go to Sunday School? DONT WANNA GO
And every Sunday morning, we now have a conversation group devoted to these topics. "Parenting and Faith" meets at 9:00 Sunday mornings in the Study - just down the steps from our Sunday school classrooms. Bring our questions, your frustrations, and by all means, your "success" stories. Coffee and tea are available in the lobby of Fellowship Hall.
"He established a decree in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children;
that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God
but keep his commandments. ~ Psalm 78:5-7
