Advent Worship 2011
Sunday Mornings
November 27 through December 18
8:00 am in Loeffler Chapel
10:15 am in the Sanctuary
Sunday worship takes place at the usual times and in the usual places (8:00 in Loeffler Chapel and 10:15 in the sanctuary). We are called to worship with the lighting of Advent candles representing the themes of the 4 Sundays: Hope (November 27), Peace (December 4), Love (December 11), and Joy (December 18). At 10:15 it is our tradition to ask some of the newest members of our church family to lead this invitation to worship.
Morning Services of Word and Sacrament
Wednesdays, November 30 through December 21
9:30 am in Loeffler Chapel
On Wednesday mornings we will gather in Loeffler Chapel for services of homily and communion led by our pastoral staff.
Longest Night Service
Wednesday, December 21
7:00 pm in Loeffler Chapel
On the longest night of the year, there will be a quiet, meditative worship service for people living through dark times, with space for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God, and holding out healing and hope. Rev. Lisa Day and our Stephen Ministry team will lead us in worship and also be available after the service to be with anyone who needs a listening ear or shoulder to lean on.
Christmas Eve
Friday, December 24
The Night Christ Was Born
4:00 pm in the Sanctuary
A children's pageant in which our youngest members retell the familiar nativity story with the barely harnessed energy that it deserves. Younger children portray sheep, cherubs, angels, and townspeople of Bethlehem. Middle schoolers fill the roles of Mary, Joseph, Herod, the innkeeper, and the magi. Those interested in being a part of this should be in touch with our children's ministry coordinator, Ashley Kuly at spcchildren@swarthmorepres.org or Associate Pastor, John Weicher, at spcyouth@swarthmorepres.org.
Lessons, Carols, and Candlelight
8:00 pm in the Sanctuary
Youth in grades 6-12 lead every aspect of this candlelight service. Young liturgists read scripture and offer prayers, the youth choir sings the anthems, and others serve as acolytes, ushers, and more. It is a sacred time of familiar word, music, and candlelight.
Traditional Candlelight Service
11:00 pm in the Sanctuary
Led by our pastoral staff, the midnight service features retiring elders as readers and high school seniors as acolytes. Come early; parking can be a challenge. Musical preludes begin at 10:40, lovely Christmas arrangements for piano and flute. By midnight the entire sanctuary is aglow with candlelight.
